OK - I couldn't resist...... :)

The new Malaysian Su-30MKM is so gorgeous, I just had to make one.

As it is based on the Su-30MKI, I decided to make them both together - using a Heller Su-27UB and Alanger Su-30 that I had in my stash - they are the same donor kit BTW.

First thing is to alter the cockpit to incorporate the MFD screens - OK, it isn't as good as Haneto's work :crying2: , but in this scale, it is adequate enough for me.

Next is to prepare the fuselage for the addition of canards .....

.....and alter the fins to increase the chord of the rudder - and add the RWR antenna that are unique to the MKM.......

That's all for now folks.....

Nice. The side-by-side comparison is a nice touch, too.

Ken,

If you still haven't been able to track down a copy of VFA's decals, I'll send you one copy for free!

PM me ok?

A million thanks for the offer, aidy......

I did a search through my decal collection after I posted about the VFA decals - and guess what?? - I already have them in my stash. :P

I had completely forgotten about them - so it was a nice surprise when I 're-discovered' them!

My forgetfulness is getting worse - I am now 60 - and I sometimes find myself in a room in my house - and I can't remember why I am there!

Or, I'll be brushing my teeth - and suddenly think "I must remember to do so-and-so" - then, literally two seconds later, I will have forgotten what it was that I must remember!!!

It is really weird - because I can remember the registration letters of most of the cars I have ever owned from 40+ years ago - but I can't remember things from two minute ago.

Now, what were we talking about ????

Regards

Ken

I think we can't find Heller's UBs or Alanger 30s, because they're all in Flankerman's stash

FM: best friend of mine said that the best thing about these age-releated disease (about forgeting things) is that it doesn't hurt and that you find out something new each day

Keep up the good work on the MKM - just come to the ARC and we'll remember what's that kit doing on your modelling table!

Feeling ashamed at my earlier attempt to make the MFD screens, I scraped all the detail off and started again.

This time I just used black decal striping, cut into squares, to represent the MFD screens.

With some Reheat dials and a central white 'get-me-home' stripe, the end result looks much better.

The finished cockpit actually looks better to the naked eye - the camera shows every little flaw.

With the cockpit tub inserted (but the seats not yet installed), I have started to cement the upper & lower fuselage halves together.

I had forgotten just how bad a kit the Airfix/Heller Su-27/UB really is - the fit is AWFUL!

But it is the only game in town for a tandem two-seat Flanker in 1:72 scale.

Hi Ken the Flankerman

i am going to reply to the Malaysian Su30MKM questions here as its more related to modelling.

To answer some of your questions, F-Toys make these short run prepainted ‘toys’ that can really pass off as detailed display models. So far they have only made 1/144 subjects.

They are also known sometimes as Cafe-Reo (weird names!!!)

The Su35 came in a sealed box with a host of other types of aircraft, and two types of markings can be found. One is the splinter blue camoed aircraft technology demonstartor, and the other has same colours but in fictional USMC aggressor markings.

The size is definitely bigger than the Dragon Flankers and match the Trumpeter Su34... i roughly compared it to scaled down drawings and they seem to match up well, give or take a couple of micro mms here and there... I have no way of determining exact dimensions as my plans are all downloaded from the net and scaled down. It seems to be closer to 1/144 than Dragon’s old kit.

The shape is quite nice, the canards and the mounts are shaped pretty well. The squared off tail planes are present.

At present this kit is no longer made but is available on ebay in small numbers. At cost price direct from Japan, they should cost around USD5.00-USD7.00 including postage (that is assuming you bought the whole box that contained all the other diff ACs as well. Most Ebayers sell them for around USD10.00 excluding postage. I have seen them go for ‘buy it now’ for around USD15.00 which is a rip off, IMHO. I bought two from ebay, from separate sellers and i got them for around USD8.00.

F-Toys also released this later set that has the Su27 (now out of stock):

They also released it in aerobatic schemes and this is still available (barely):

you could try searching on ebay too of course...!

If you would like some pictures i’ll gladly email them to you!

 HTH

I have added plastic card 'shoulders' - ready to be blended in with Milliput.

su-30_009.jpg

I am doing two models at once - a Malaysian Su-30MKM and an Indian Su-30MKI as they are, essentially, the same, with just minor differences.

The Alanger kit is OK to work on, but the Heller kit is moulded in much harder plastic that is very brittle.

I have already cracked a part as I was hacking away at the plastic.

I also forgot to open up a slot for the IFR probe - before cementing the fuselage halves together - so I had to gouge out a slot afterwards.

It is not too difficult on the Alanger moulding - but a problem on the hard Heller plastic.

I think I'll make the MKM with canopy and airbrake open, but with IFR probe retracted - and the MKI with canopy closed, but IFR extended - just to ring the changes.

The first application of Milliput has been applied - and sanding down started - the starboard shoulder has been done in this photo....

su-30_010.jpg

.... I am not quite happy with it - so I have added more filler - this time Green Stuff - to build it up more.

It is very important to get this part right - correctly shaped and blended into the forward fuselage with no visible joints.

I have also added (or should that be taken away??) the IFR probe recesses.....

su-30_011.jpg

.... the front one is the Alanger kit and will be the MKM with retracted probe, the rear one is the Heller kit - and will be the MKI with extended probe - just to show the difference.

As soon as the Green Stuff has hardened, its back to sanding and blending.....
