PlasticWeapons
Hi fellas. I'm nearing the completion of my VF-31 F-4J build (Hasegawa 1/48). I'd like to detail the weapons pylons a bit more plus I want to attach sway braces on the outboard weapons stations but I don't have any photo references of these pylons looking from underneath. (I removed the trapezoid-shaped adapter found on the bottom of the missile pylons.) I've searched online but no joy so if you can point me in the right direction, I can post pics of the finished model! Thanks. This F-4 will have a centerline fuel tank, 4 AIM-9s (thanks Larry), and two AIM-7s. I'm gonna use the Fox One decal sheet...
kenlilly106
Ryan, Here's a shot of the aft end of an F-4G pylon ( I know, it's not an F-4J but hopefully similar) Wish I'd known you were looking for details like this, I was all over an F-4S back in November. aim9xray
These are the inboard pylons from an F-4S. Note that there are grooves under the forward half of the pylon that the Sparrow missile slides onto, just like the Sidewinder does on its launcher. (The Sparrow is eject-launched off the Phantom's belly stations and rail-launched off of the pylons.) The Air Force pylons (with the curved leading edge) are incapable of Sparrow carriage. Also, the sway braces are part of the pylon, not the wing, as molded in some kits. There is almost always a gap between the sway brace plate and the wing. PlasticWeapons
Thanks Craig and Ken. Craig, I've seen that photo over on Prime Portal(?) but do you have one that's much closer? Ryan F Edited March 12, 2008 by PlasticWeapons

kenlilly106
Best I have as well, if you're willing to chip in $40 for gas and museum admission I'll go back and take all the pics you want of the pylon on an F-4S. Ken
Impatient Pete
Thread revival time! OK Ryan, not sure if this helps. It's an outboard AF pylon, but hey... I have more on the way soon- Pete Edited April 28, 2008 by Impatient Pete
DonSS3
Don't know if this is what you're looking for or not. These were some photos I took of a USMC VMFA-232 F-4S at Kadena Okinawa in 1980. http://s20.photobucket.com/albums/b229/DDo...%20USMC%20F-4s/ Inboard pylon with TER:
Gene K
Here are some drawings that may help with the panel lines, and undersides: First, the outbd pylon: attached to which is the adapter: And here's the inbd pylon: attached to which is the adapter: Gene K

Gene K
OK Ryan, not sure if this helps. It's an outboard AF pylon, but hey... Pete, Looks like an unusual AF pylon to me since it has the "wings" of the fuel tank pylon (which is integral to the tank on AF birds). To what Phantom type is that pylon attached? OMG! Uh, yeah, I'll be working on some masters for the Hasegawa T-4 Dolphin and probably start a bit on the F-5F cockpit too.
Gene K
D model Thanks, Pete. I'd sure appreciate a side view of that particular pylon. I don't think it's an AF armament pylon, but I'm not a weapons guy. Gene K
