Italeri 1/35 UH-60 + M978

Recommended Posts

Here are the kit boxes

1UH606.jpg

1UH607.jpg

And I face immediately the first difficulties :

It seems the nose profile is too round, should be more pointy like the Italeri 1/48 kit

1UH601.jpg

1UH602.jpg

There seems also to be an issue with the turbine-housing/fuselage jonction at the extreme end

1UH605.jpg

on the real aircraft, the junction has a smooth line

Italeri 1/48 is close to it

Academy/Italeri 1/35 has a brocken junction line.

Is it comming from the fuselage shape or from the housing shape ?

Comparing to the 1/48 kit, there is also a big difference on the aft fuselage junction at the bottom :

Italeri 1/48 is flat

1UH604.jpg

1/35 kit is round

1UH603.jpg

So I will have to check tons of pics again :D

I will certainly need your feeling

The nose on Academy is allright. Italeri 48 scale just gives that illusion of more pinty nose because its windows are smaller then they should be. On the other hand Academy(or should I say MRC) windows seems to be bigger then they should. But the last ones are molded so that the "riveted" frame is on the clear plastic part - when you install them - nose will look OK.

I did not quiet get the thing about "turbine-housing/fuselage jonction "...

The main problem there in 1/35 kit is that the APU exhaust is too small and is in the wrong spot. Has to be moved a little lower. I chenged it with brass tube anyway...

About the bottom part of the tail boom and aft hull. IMHO MRC kit is more accurate there too.

Good luck

Andy

Hi

I'm currently studying hundreds of pics to correct the shape where marked

But it seems the door mount profile on the kit does not exist on the real helicopter

1UH608.jpg

It is very difficult to see on pics : door is open, or exhaust hide this part

does somebody know how the door top rail ends ?

It's important to know before to correct the fuselage shape behind

Here you are my friend ))))

exhaustshroudsupport.jpg

You are correct - its not like that in the kit. But since its almost under the exhaust and in 99% is not on sight I am not sure if its worth to correct this mistake.

Thanks for pointing at it BTW - Nice catch!

Thank you Andy.

This picture showes good how it is made.

On other pictures, I see the triangular rail holder, so combined with your picture, I will find out where the rail ends.

I agree, it's not worth modifying, especialy if doors are open.

But you know I want to correct the fuselage shape behind the rail and your picture helps me a lot

to find out how is the connection Fuselage/roof in this area.

I appreciate very much you shares this picture

I don't know how detailed model you are trying to make, but the Academy/Italeri 1/35 blackhawk has totally wrong exhaust! It is oversized and sticks up way too high ruining blackhawk's beautifully streamlined sillhoutte. This fault is almost impossible to fix without serious kit bashing.

You are right Delta Force with the false angle.

I will try to have it accurate. At this scale, it's important, when I see what some guys make in 1/72.

The top of the roof between the exhaust seems OK in shape

However I didn't know exhausts are oversized too, thanks to point it.

As I have no drawings, I can only compare with photos.

I made a last check with the door and was not so happy with how the top rail protrude over it

1UH6012.jpg

So I finaly decided to remove this rail. I will replace it with Evergreen profile and putty

1UH6011.jpg

I prepared also the reshape on the rear roof joint by a saw line

1UH6010.jpg

There will be some holes to fill :(

1UH609.jpg

So, I've beginning this time, ;) ;) hope I will succeed

What do you guys think, should I continue here or in the In progress forum ?

Ok I continue

It's decided, I will do #24497 under KFOR. If I'm right, it's the 86-24497 an UH-60A MedEvac used by 57th MedCo AirAmb.

well i'm totaly lost here, if somebody can explain me how this unit is called. And I must share I'm not totaly sure it belongs to this company.

to rebuild the rear fuselage-roof junction, I began to grain under the saw line with my dremel : it's easier to acces.

1UH6013.jpg

1UH6014.jpg

After that, I aligned the top side of the saw line

Just a litle Milliput to close the holes

1UH6016.jpg

and I will think about moving the outlets

1UH6015.jpg

Hope I do not move to a wrong direction ;)

57th MedCo AirAmb

The above is for the 57th Medical Company, Air Ambulance out of Ft Bragg, NC. They fly UH-60A and L MedEvac Blackhawks used for casualty evacuation, also called Dystoffs. The 57th is known as "The Original Dustoff" since they were the first helicopter Dustoff unit in Vietnam. This doesn't sound right though since MedEvac birds have red crosses on a white square and are forbidden by the Geneva Convention from carrying weapons.

Things are going slowly forward

I reshaped the top side of junction each side

1UH6017.jpg

Then I added a tape befoe refilling the bottom side

1UH6018.jpg

Will see how it will work

and for those interested, here is a link to 57 th Medical Company

Thank you for your encouragement Andy. I follow with interest your MH-47E conversion on FSM.

I have also a CH-47D in my stash.

on my build, I just opened the APU exausts holes on new locations, both sides

1UH6019.jpg

and opened the mesh holes on the tail

1UH6020.jpg

Small progress

does any of you know the angle of the main APU exaust left side ? (before it's too late <_< )

It seems the tube is going up

Yes Andy, I opened the fuel acces panel, I will show the bird refuelling.

I guess that during refuelling, other panels are closed ? except doors...

I bevel the bottom door rail, in order to add a U-shaped profile

1UH6021.jpg

and added also a U shaped profile where I removed the top door rail

1UH6022.jpg

I still have a lot of sanding, the bottom rail has to finish slightly higher

1UH6023.jpg

well, I return sanding :taunt:

Thank you for your answer Erick.

Looking at this picture, the sliding door seems half open, so I was not sure doors are (normaly) always closed

image here I hope
