Italeri GR7 Harrier

Recommended Posts

Well as usual i was checking for references as a painting guide for this kit when i started noticing a few disgrepancies. The jet i was go to model was ZG861 in the colours of 3 Sqn AA in 2000. The only problem with this is that ZG861 was written off in 1997!!

So instead i thought i might do ZG860 which is featured as the box art with sharks mouth. However i can`t find any picture references of it ever having been in such markings.

So as a result i was wondering if anyone on here had come across such an issue before looking for references for this kit and if so would someone be kind enough to assist me with this???

Many thanks

James

Found these on Airliners.net:

Looks like 860 has never made it to squadron service, being with test establishments & lately converted to GR9 standard. No pics of sharmouth markings although many GR7's were so painted for Operation Telic. HTH

Where to start with the Italeri GR.7 kit...

The sharkmouth aircraft they have down as ZG (and nothing else) was in fact ZD408. The low viz roundels for this scheme are way oversized (nearer 1/48) and they have them as being on both wings upper and lower, whereas the they were only carried on the port (upper) and lower (stb). The sharkmouth is also too big. This is some artwork I did for SAM magazine a while back that shows the aircraft Italeri were trying to depict:

They have the 4 sqn option down as being an overall F.S. Light Ghost Grey (same as the Warden aircraft) when it should be the two-tone scheme of BS381 629 Dark camouflage grey and BS381 638 Dark sea grey. Again, roundels should only be on the port (upper) and stb (lower) wing positions.

They also would have you use the same stencils on all three schemes, whereas the two-tone grey and two-tone green schemes actually use different coloured stencils (the green scheme uses full colour, the greys are counter-shaded), but the stencils are inaccurate and incomplete anyway - they have the cockpit stencils as being mirrored when they are in fact handed, and what decal 17 is supposed to be I have no idea, I have never seen that on any Harrier GR.7!

I think your best best James would be to get hold of the one of the Xtradecal sheets as they seem to be be the most accurate of all the aftermarket Harrier GR.7 sheets out there, but these are for the current two-tone grey schemes.

Any more questions, feel free to ask.
