Chappie
Great pictures! In today's world does it seem strange to think of the Cold War as "the good old days"? Chappie

jinxx1
I love that shot of the 87th FIS B in the forground. The Six was just a beautiful airplane in any scheme, but thank God it never went camo.

F106A
The Six was just a beautiful airplane in any scheme, but thank God it never went camo. I agree but there was a plan for it in T.O. 1-1-4 just in case! I've always thought it was interesting how they show the complete canopy and windscreen frame in F.S. 36622 Gray as well as the radome. jinxx1
I agree but there was a plan for it in T.O. 1-1-4 just in case! I've always thought it was interesting how they show the complete canopy and windscreen frame in F.S. 36622 Gray as well as the radome. There was one for the Shakey too! But fortunately neither it nor the Six were ever painted that way. I am glad you pointed out the gray canopy frame in the drawing, I had never noticed that before. ikar
The 87th ship was flown in by LTC Coe. He was arriving to take charge of the 5th as we transitioned into the F-15. He used a "B" model so the 87th could get their aircraft right back. Aircraft 005 (known as balls 5) was flown by the commander, and balls 2 by the exec. I took these shots from my office window while at Minot. When we had a surge, all the flyable aircraft would line up in two lines, nose to nose. After getting their final checks they would take off two at a time, usually one from each side , and get off the ground as fast as they could. A very impressive thing to watch. The problem being it was practice for a sudden evacuation to a northern deployment base in Canada because their home base was about to be attacked, most likely by a nuke. I've been on a base that actually had all its aircraft evacuatebecause of an attack. They were leaving during the fighting. When it was all over, it was surprising how quiet and empty feeling a base could be. THe only thing we had were the Pedro's and the damaged ships that couldn't fly. It stayed that way for days.
