Zactoman
Here is the Tamiya 1/48 Dewoitine D.520 built OOB with mostly homemade markings. I started this kit several years ago inspired by this artwork which a friend of mine found in an old French magazine. The paint is Modelmaster enamels, Future, Oil paint in the cracks (Windsor Newton), Testors Gloss and Dullcoats mixed with a watercolor weathering. A very light drybrushing of white oil on some of the high spots. A final clear coat with a drop of dust mixed in followed by some black chalk pastels for the gun and exhaust burns. The kit was a pleasure to build and went together with no problems. The only area I had any trouble with (other than old kit decals) was the main gear struts didn't seem to line up properly. This was easily fixed by scraping some paint and plastic from the mounting pins.
Zactoman
The few kit decals I tried disintegrated, probably because they were too old. The Red and white on the roundels are Aeromaster decals. The blue centers, red white and blue stripes and red and yellow stripes are painted. The wingtip lights were covered in bare metal foil then tinted with Tamiya clear colors. Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures of the cockpit before gluing the fuselage shut... Any comments, critiques or suggestions are welcome! I'm debating whether to display the model on a mirror or a simple runway/field base.... I'm planning to take some outdoor shots of the model in the coming days. I'll post them here if they come out good. Thanks for looking! <_< Chris
madmike
Zacto That is a beautiful model, nicely built! <_< MikeJ
geedubelyer
Not bad,....not bad at all! You know,......you're quite good at this....maybe you should do it for a living? Heh, heh....... Superb Zactoman. :) I'm glad you had fun building this little model. Anything else in the queue? As I said in the progress thread, the paintwork looks totally flawless. I'm over-awed by the crispness of the masking and how even the paint is. What a spectacular build. This just goes to show that there is no need for all of the super-detailing to turn out a really nice model. Thanks for taking the time to post these pics. It's been a real pleasure to watch. Please be sure to post plenty more when you've taken some in natural light.
Steph'
Hello Chris, Very very nice work on this D-520. The assembly is very clean and made general is very realistic. The very coloured camo suits him very well.. Your painting of stripes is very nice and l it is definitely better than the décals. Cheer! Moreover it is a mythical plane the French air force. :) I have just a small doubt about the color a light of the gray on the top. But I am not sure because I am not specialist in Propeller. Cordially. Stéph'

jr_rules2
That's a wonderful finish you have there.
MA Cooke
Very, very well done. The weathering is perfect - not overdone at all. You did a great job on the paint - all the colors, stripes, etc. WOW! Thanks for sharing. Mitch
Jamie Cheslo
Wow, Chris, that Dewoitine came out superbly! Your watercolour weathering really turned out nicely, as did the homemade decals. From what I can see of the cockpit interior, it looks superb as well. Did you ever get around to putting seatbelts on the seat? Thanks for sharing this build with us, it was really neat to watch. Your painting skills are absolutely superb! Man, those stripes!

Zactoman
Thank you all for the very nice comments! <_< As I mentioned it was a pleasure to build. I tried out several paint techniques that were new to me on this build including pre-shading and blue tak sausage masking. I also purposely exaggerated highlighting the paint then toning it down with a tint. I managed to get some nice subtle effects that don't show up well in the pictures. Hopefully they will when I take some out-door photos...That may not be for a while though, it's snowing here! The in-progress thread is >>>here<<<. I have just a small doubt about the color a light of the gray on the top. But I am not sure because I am not specialist in Propeller.I'm no specialist/expert either ;) I have seen the specialists arguing about proper French colors on other web-sites though and it seemed that there was no firm answer... My main reference was the painting I posted in that first pic. The paints were the Model Master French colors. It wouldn't be the first time they missed a bit... It's a cool looking, obscure little airplane with an interesting paint scheme... It was a fun build and even more fun painting it! Thanks for looking! Chris :D

Zactoman
I managed to get some nice subtle effects that don't show up well in the pictures. Hopefully they will when I take some out-door photos...That may not be for a while though, it's snowing here! Almost a year later and I never did get any outdoor pics...And it's snowing again...I did buy a softbox light tent and it showed up in the mail today! I had to play... I got much better pics using the softbox! I'd still like to get some nice outdoor pics. Maybe next year... Thanks for looking! :D
