AVIATIONGRAPHIC.COM
Clave, love your neat style, so bright! what are the original artworks size in pixels? Are they made with only vectorial software, or also "photoshopped?". I work both with Corel Draw and Corel Photo Paint. Cheers, Ugo
Gray
Super work, Clave.
illithid00
Holy crap! Those are all awesome! I particularly love the Shenyang J-5 from Chinese AF 1958.
Clave
Thanks! I use a vector program (Illustrator) to do 99% of these - Only the final resize and adding the border is done in Photoshop. My 'normal' output is at 72 dpi which makes the picture size around 1,500 across, but I can output at 300 dpi which equates to a 6,500 pixel wide image... Just to give you an idea of that, this is the tail of the Afghan MiG:
mival
Your profiles are stunning! I just registered to congratulate you for your work. I myself tried to draw some profiles (some of which were MiG-17s) a few time ago, but they look rather simple in front of yours! Just keep on woth the good work. Will we be able to see some MiG-21s in the future? Lots of nice schemes with this plane, isn'it?
TaiidanTomcat
incredible detail! great work
Karl Sander
I REALLY like the early Afghan and early ('checkerboard') Egyptian ones!
LaNdStOrM
Sweet. love the Algerian ones. Nice to see someone using illustrator for profiles. I always thought people who were using only PShop were missing a trick. Now if only i can make gradient meshes do what i want them to...
Clave
They never do, but I shout at them until they give in to my demands...

niart17
man these are awesome! so many different schemes and all of them equally well done. so i'm curious about how you use illustrator to do these. is your basic plane mostly the line work and then you build the color shapes on top with varied levels of transparency similar to how the PS guys are doing it? whatever you're doing, it's working! Clave
More or less - I have a lot of layers - The aircraft is is divided into parts first, and the outlines are drawn over the line drawing, then each part has layers added for colour, markings, shading, rivets, and shadows - Now the panel lines, rivets and fasteners, shading and shadows remain consistent throughout, but the colour and markings can be changed as they are underneath the other layers. I don't know if it is unique, but it suits me... I have shown a 'hybrid' here which I made by copy/pasting the colour layers from several different '17s' - this is another area where Illustrator scores well - you can paste things in exactly the same place from drawing to drawing... Shading is done using a Gradient Mesh layer on top of the colours (100% overlay) and shadows are done in Black @ 30% Transparency.... MiG-17 is 88 Layers btw. niart17
i'll have to try that with some stuff i do for work. it's not aviation but the technique would definately transfer to what i'm doing. thanks. Bill
Clave
Oh and remember if you are filling a shape with colour, or using an outline as a 'cookie cutter' to slice through something, you must have closed shapes...
