...Yes it's...was a Mig-21...

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody. I am posting my latest "masterpiece" after reading about the problems that fellow modellers have with Critisism...But lets move on to the real "piece of interest". My latest diorama depicts an Afgan Mig-21 left sometime, somewhere in the middle of nowhere. Some photos, so we all know what I am talking about, and then you can Hit me with your critique:

Your landing gear's a little crooked, the port main gear strut to be exact. :stooges:

From actual photos of scenes like this (man, there must be hundreds of these wrecks, huh?) that I've seen your diorama captures the look and feel perfectly. It all looks very "natural" in that everything that's "out of place" is right where it should be!

Neat idea and very well done, I'd say.

i'm now verry intrested in the progress pics!!

My thoughts exactly!

This build really looks fantastic, one of the coolest dioramas I've seen in a while.

I'm particularly interested in the way you've done the weathering (exposed metal areas) and the whole burnt-out central section. Btw, where does the engine come from?

The model is a great representation of an abandoned aircraft :woot.gif: My only suggestion for next time, is when photographing the subject, to use a higher F number if you can change the setting on your camera. Having a small aperture and a longer exposure will keep more of the model in focus. However, sometimes this isn't possible on compact automatic digi cameras.

Apart from that, great subject and nicely done.

Well...the kit is in 1/48 scale and is, what else...the Academy kit. Now about the weathering. For the first time in my modelling life I used the "salt technic". One comment though...it really works! I painted the areas around the "burn" with Testors exhaust metalliser, yeap unusual, but it worked for me, and the rest of the airframe silver ...and light blue...and white...and light sand, actually I could'nt make out from the various reference pictures I had, what colour was the actual undercoat , so I just used everything. The Jet engine is from CMK, but after a long discussion with the local Greek modelling forums, I came to the conclusion, that it was...too short. So I estimated the actual length from photos and a very usefull diagram from an old issue of Flight International to get closer to the right size.

Wow that is one ncie model and diorama!!!

My only critique would be...

If you can doo all that customisation and scratch building. I think you should have made a new fan for the engine. or at least hollowed out the blades....maybe even made some snapped off and/or crooked?

But dam, that is a cool model!

Yup...bigger pics!

And it´s a kind of a sad dio isn´t it? Excellent model workmanship tho!

Cheers!

I just learned that you can click on the pic and it will take you to his photobucket with a much larger photo. Sometimes technology really escapes me along with common sense!! LOL

You've got a big hole in the back of your plane that needs to be puttied!

Seriously, your execution and presentation is fantastic. Executing battle damage is extremely hard and most of the time it's overdone. You've pulled it off perfectly and your finish is top notch.

I was going to ask the same question that Maker did about the stars on the roundels but I'm not familiar with Afghan aircraft at all.

...I love this forum!!!...you were all wright with your comments...ok.ok.ok, lets take the comments step by step. First of all - and keep it between us - I was a "chicken" with the jet engine, since it was resin and "expencive" , it cost me more than the kit(...it was a gift), I left it this way becouse I was'nt sure how to work resin to "dammaged resin". The "Afgan Stars"....hhhmmmm...I am 51% sure that I have seen them in a profile being placed that way...maybe... or rather ...let it be...Now about the way I represent them on the model, I used masks and with a makeup sponge(...no comments please) and paint I tried to represent them really abussed. I am not happy 100% with them but I am happy 99%, yeap I can live with it...

Now I just remembered I forgot to place the "stars" under the wings...Uuppps...

Hey zark,

Cool MiG! Your scheme is a little different from the one I was standing in front of outside of Kandahar Airfield in 2005, but cool, nonetheless

AFAIK, this is the only intact MiG 21 left in Afghanistan

Cheers, Ian

You really suprised me Ian...My first thought (I had'nt seen the picture yet) was that you was a "strange" tourist, but then again I realised what you was talking about. Thanks for the picture...
