Chaff/Flare help to identify

Recommended Posts

Hi ALL

Need some help in identifying folowing chaff/flare dispensers:

Any info on them greatly appreciated! Name/Model number, when enered service, used on Air Force, Navy or Army helicopters etc.

from the photoes I have seen - this type is used only on ARMY birds?

some time ago I've scratchbuilt this type of dispenser with separate cartridge and positionable mount (not on the pic) in 1/35 scale. The main idea was to release a set of let's say 8-10 of these along with maybe some sensors and detectors commonly used on US helos.

Then I started to work on gun mounts for Pave Hawk and discovered that dispensers used on them are of different type. Since I have to scratch build them too now, might aswell include them in the set aswell.

This type seems to be used on HH-60Gs and Pave Hawks...correct me if I am wrong

Are they used only by NAVY and AIR Force? What about NG birds?

anybody can help me with the good close up photo of these without the protective plates? Also seems like Pave Hawk plates have circular cutout in the centre of the plate, but the ones on HH-60G - just four screws in the corners. What's up with that? Different type? or just manufacturer?

Thanks for any info

Cheers!

Andy

The first is the M130 dispenser. Its technically "a general purpose aircraft dispenser," so it can be used with flares or chaff cartridges (along with impulse cartridges, I assume for function testing and maybe even illumination, at least in theory). The munitions listed in the tech manual are M206 countermeasure flare, the M1 and RR-170A/AL chaff cartridges, and the M796 impulse cartridge.

I have no idea about the USAF/Navy types.

those chaff and flare buckets, look pretty good. Well my friend, if you need pics of the EGM (External Gun Mounts) by all means let me know. And also when do you estimate your buckets and EGM will be ready for prime time. Count me in for four sets.

Hey Andy!

I noticed the difference as well, that's why I made the chaff buckets from scratch fro my Pave Hawk:

Let me know if you want some.

Hey-

Just FYI, the Navy and Marines use the ALE-47 system as well, but not those dispensers. The Navy/Marine expendables have a different form factor, which is to say that they are round cylinders and not square cylinders, so they use different dispensers. They materials in the expendables are the same, just different shape but the system that fires them is the same as far as I know. (Although we do have round/square adapters so different expendable types can be evaluated, but not out in the fleet, I think).

Nice pictures. I have always been fascinated by the Army (and Air Force?) that fire chaff up through the rotor system. (note in the one picture the dispenser marked chaff only) Damn, don't put the wrong expendable in that dispenser!!

Regards,

Phil

Thanks everybody!

Curt,

If you have any close ups on the open ALE-47 - and basic dimensions - that would be very handy

Cheers!

Andy

Andy,

The buckets would be just a big open box if they are not loaded. If you want the look of fired off flares or chaff, (that looks like a honey comb like what came in the kit) I won't be able to help. I would have to say that 90% of the time here in the states they fly around with just a cover over the empty bucket. There is a little more to it, but basically it's just a cover. If you want to depict a fully loaded bucket then just etch squares on the cover, paint it red for flares and gray for chaff and apply a wash.

Here is a pic of an Empty bucket . And another.

This build looks great!

I'll be watching!
