This is my first entry on the ARC forums.

The August 2010 issue of "COMBAT AIRCRAFT MONTHLY" has a feature article on the TH-1H Huey now in use to train USAF helicopter pilots.

It is a limited production model (24 airframes) remanufactured from old US ARMY UH-1H airframes. I have only built one helicopter model and that was a Monogram HUEY kit back in the 1960's. The feature article aroused my interest to build a kit of something different. The TH-1H is a single engine version with dual controls / identical pilot stations plus a new longer nose.

My usual is to build 1/48 or 1/32 scale kits.

Does anyone know of a UH-1H or other kit in 1/48 or 1/32 with a single engine that could be the basis for modeling the TH-1H? Are there kit modification parts available that may help in the effort to replicate the Th-1H? I do not want to go as far as chopping up two kits to make one.

Any knowledge or assistance will be very much appreciated

thanks,

thanks,

The TH-1H is basically a Huey II manufactured as an Air Force trainer with a glass cockpit. The 212 nose is an option for the standard Huey II as well. your best bet to reproduce a TH-1H with minimal effort is in 1/35. Get either the Panda or Dragon UH-1D and UH-1N kits. All you will need from the UH-1D/H kit is the single engine parts so if you can find an incomplete one with these parts you are money. The I/P will need to be modified with three big MFDs and you may want to try to make the crash attenuating seats that are now standard in the TH-1H, but otherwise the OOB parts are pretty much spot on for a TH-1H. Also you may want to look at the Fireball Modelworks ASE upgrade set for the tropical filter that is typical of the TH-1H as well. The FB parts are 1/32 but others have used them successfully on 1/35 builds. You should also know that the nose on the Panda/Dragon kits is not terribly accurate. Cobra Company makes a UH-1N upgrade set with a new nose if you want to really up the accuracy level. I'll post some pics for you later but that should get you started. HTH

Actually, the Dragon/Panda UH-1N kits come with the parts still on the tree for the single engined (D/H) version. So all you need is the N kit.

You can see the original, single engine cowl parts on the sprue with the fuselage halves. The new sprue with the N model parts is on the lower right.

You could also use the Italeri 1/72 UH-1N if you prefer that scale. The Panda/Dragon kit is scaled up from this kit.

See this thread for general issues and info on the Panda/Dragon UH-1 kits.

Thanks Gino for the correction. I don't have the 1/35 UH-1N kit so I didn't know that. However, neither the 1/72 or 1/48 Italeri UH-1N kits have the D/H parts and there is no UH-1D/H kit based on the N kit in 1/72 like there is in 1/48 and 1/35. I forgot that you can also make a TH-1H in 48th with this Fireball set and this CC set. However, the CC set doesn't have a new nose so it might be of minimal benefit for a 1/48 TH-1H build. Also you will need both kits to get all the D/H parts in 48th so the 1/35 UH-1N might be the better way to go.

For Rotorwash and HeavyArty:

Thanks for the kit source information for the TH-1H. I will be able to go after the needed kits now.

Rotorwash: What is the source document for the pictures in your post # 5?

The airframe S/N 0-22502 is shown in the COMBAT MONTHLY article.

Heavy Arty:

Are there any UH-1H models still active on Hnter AAF or Ft. Stewart?

Buckeyefan,

I am the source of those images. Took em myself a few weeks ago. I never post others photos without acknowledging the source.

PS: I bet Greg Davis did the TH-1H pics in the Combat Monthly piece

Unfortunately there are no Hueys still flying here. Pretty much of them are gone from Active and Guard service. There are a few as gate guards and musuem pieces still here, but thats it.
