VMFA314Knights
I recently picked up (another) 1/48 Wellington (couldn't resist the low price) and was looking around for possible RCAF markings when I came across this article . The Wellington was with 20 OTU and had codes JM D however I can't seem to find any reference photos of what the aircraft marking colours were - I am boldly assuming it was painted in standard Dark Earth/Dark Green over Black with typical yellow surround RAF roundels on the sides an regular blue/Red on top, however the Sqn. lettering / serial # could have been grey or red - I'm leaning toward red as the aircraft crashed in January 1942 and I think the codes were red by this time. Can anyone help me out with what this A/C may have looked like? - or feel free to point out another RCAF Wellington 1C example to tackle instead. I had better luck finding reference for my Mk. III in RCAF markings. Thanks in advance - Happy modelling David

As regards an RCAF IC-you only have one option, and that is 419. While several RCAF Squadons flew the Wellington, and more than one type, 419 was the only squadron to use the IC. VMFA314Knights
Tom, I had beenon a 419 Sqn. website (as well as lots of other sites) to do a few hours of research and after spending a few more hours (my how timeflies) I think I've found another excellent subject. 419 Sqn. Wellington 1c Z1145 VRoA. However, I only have reference photos of what appear to be Mk.III aircraft from 419 Sqn. (lots of pictures of Q and one of A) and may have to make the assumption that thiswas the marked similarly..? Sad but interesting note: Canadian crewmember (Fl/Eng: P/O. Thomas George Cottier J/4885 R.C.A.F. 27) who was involvedin the crash of Z1145 (KIA) had survived a previous crash of Wellington1c X9747HAoE. I also found the back story on the Wellington Mk. III (x3763 KWoL from 425 Sqn.) lost on a mission to Stuttgart that I have planned as well. So at least one RCAF Wellington should get completed next year. Thanks for the help, David
Tom
Hi David, I've gone through my stuff and I've come up empty handed. Tom
VMFA314Knights
Tom, Appreciate the attempt. I've got some time before I get to the paint and markings stage so if I don't come up with any reference photos I'll go with what I believe it looked like based on other aircraft that I do have photos of. The RAF kept a pretty tight reign on things so likely it wouldn't stray too far from factory standards. Going with - 419 Sqn. Wellington 1c Z1145 VRoA. and 425 Sqn. KWoL for the Mk. III. The Trumpeter kit looks really good so far (I don't know what all the whining was about the "overdone" geodetic surface as it seems about right to me... maybe they hadn't seen too many photos of a Whimpy as I have several that clearly show the effect across the surfaces.
