Northrop - Mitsubishi F-3A

Recommended Posts

Hi there, another sneak build from me :D

I just haven´t had the peace of mind to do big build threads of late but at least I show you the results!

The YF-23 is a big favourite of mine and I was really happy when Hobby boss released one in 1/48th scale...

unfortunately they made a hash of things and it turns out it´s very hard to make a YF-23 out of the kit :P

Well that doesn´t stop me from making a cool What-if, specially after I had seen Zactoman´s cool art work...

Smitten with the blue on blue japanese scheme I set out to make an Northrop/ Mitsubishi F-3A, the replacement

the ageing japanese Eagles. Not really interested in the F-35 japan wanted something more of a air superiority

fighter. They didn´t get the F-22 but somehow they managed to get permission to cooperate with Northrop and

revive the YF-23 program and develop the Northrop/Mitsubishi F-3A from it.

´Bout the kit...

It was a very straightforward build not a Tamyia but the parts seemed to fit. One tip would be to glue the

wings onto the fuselage halfs before the fuselage is closed.....another thing to do before you close the

fuselage: add nose weight! I didn´t and it´s a tail sitter :/ See if I´ll get around to fix that int e future

or simply nail it to a base..

Another thing...it was a real hog to photograph, it´s huuuuuge...I had forgotten my black background at work so I

dug up an old grey one and.. well it´s not all that good I think I´d prefer black.

Well here are the pics!

Been admiring the black widow..... demn that aircraft looked good from every angle! I thought that was the hallmark of great design....wasn't there someone who said: "if it looks good, it is good" about aircraft design?

Very nice Aigore! Really nice, convincing paint job. I LOVE the decal on the nose! Great placement! Great work!

Thanx Crazy Snap Captain.

I don't know Japanese and just selected the kanji signs at random from my spare decal box,

according to White Wolf the kanji on the nose stands for "restoration" and the kanji on the inside of the tail stands for "lucky".

The kanji on the nose was inspired by an anime called "Yukikaze", wich i whole heartedly recommend!

I actually thought about doing mine in that scheme but changed my mind. Be prepared for "something completely different". By the way, how much weight do you think will be needed in the nose? Yours looks great.

Thanx jynski:D

Looking forwards to your take on the yf-23 :) about the nose weight, you nerd the equal weight of the stabs, since it stands perfectly on its wheels without them :P

Some 40-50 grams would do.
