Flankerman
Look what the postman just delivered....... Mikro-Mir's 1/350 scale injection-moulded Royal Navy K-Class submarine... MM's box art - showing a steam powered K Boat underway. The instruction sheet consists of simple exploded diagrams - with the etched parts in red.... The painting instructions, etched-brass fret and decals for HMS K4 and K5 The hull is in two vertically-split halves with fine engraved detail - and nearly 1 foot long!! The rest of the injection-moulded parts - including a display stand. This is a very welcome release from Mikro-Mir - of an oddball, but fascinating British submarine - steam-powered to enable it to attain the necessary surface speed to keep up with the Grand Fleet. The whole concept was flawed from the start - with most of the class being lost in tragic accidents - see Wiki for a brief history. I can't wait to get started on this new kit - plus explore the conversion possibilities into a later version - HMS K-26. The hull might even be suitable to scratch HMS X1 Thank you Mikro-Mir :thumbsup:/>/> Ken
Flankerman
I have assembled the hull and superstructure - and added the ertched-brass hatches, ladders, conning tower roof etc.... The white parts are where I cut back the front of the superstructure too much and had to make good. The etched-brass rectangles are the covers over the beam torpedo tubes. Mikro-Mir provide two half-teardrop shaped fairings to go under the front of the conning tower to make a breakwater - but they are not mentioned in the instructions !! It is obvious where they go though..... I'm enjoying this build..... Ken
mike_espo
Cool. I have one in the stash also. Is there an issue with the conning tower? Never checked. Edited February 10, 2016 by mike_espo
Rich in name only
The instructions photo shows a parts section crossed out. Assuming that's the normal "not used" what is not used on such a specialized subject? just curious. They were, as you point out, fascinating ships.
Flankerman
The crossed-out parts are duplicated on the sprue - one is a slightly different moulding to the other. The first one has a cone on the end of the prop shaft - over which the etched-brass prop is supposed to fit. But they must have changed their minds - because the other (revised) moulding has the cones separate - so you fit the EB prop - and then fit the cone (prop hub) onto the EB prop. It sounds more complicated than it is - just use the prop shafts that are not crossed out. As for the conning tower - no problem - its just the the 'fairings' under the overhanging conning tower are not mentioned in the instructions - but it is obvious where they go. If you are interested, I modified a second kit to make the very different K-26 - here. Then I took a third kit to use the modified hull and scratched HMS X 1. Micro-Mir have just released a kit of HMS M1. Ken PS - More of my 1/350 scale subs here - if you're interested.
Rich in name only
Like those other kits too. Your sprue strips for the lengthening plug is a nice technique! I've thought about how to do that, seeing others do sanded blocks or lots of filler. Current kit is mostly OOB but these make me want to get back to the ones with lots of mods! Thanks!
