I know of one good technique that involves going to your local craft store and getting some very inexpensive circle "thingys". Go to the little girls section where the rhinestones are. They are about the size of a dime and shine a different way at every angle, like how high quality optics shine. Cut it out or use a punch and glue it on the horizontal projector area and then use some thin film for the actual hud.
